A compelling movie called "Sector 36," starring Vikrant Massey, Deepak Dobriyal, and Akash Khurana, was released on Netflix on September 13, 2024. This movie draws inspiration from the infamous 2006 Noida serial murders case, also known as the Nithari serial murders.
In this blog article, We’ll explore what happened in the Nithari case, identify those responsible, and discuss other relevant aspects of this haunting story.
All About The Nithari case
(Around late 90's, many people from Uttar Pradesh (UP) and Bihar migrated to Delhi and nearby areas like Noida, hoping for better opportunities and education. This sudden influx of people caused Noida’s population to surge rapidly. While they came seeking a better life, many ended up living in slums with limited chances for improvement. Nithari, a village in Noida, was one such area heavily populated by these migrants.)
In 2006, the small village of Nithari in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, was shocked by a terrible discovery. Authorities found the skeletal remains of missing women and children behind a bungalow.
For months, families had reported their loved ones missing, but the police ignored them. The case took a turn when a decomposing hand was found in a drain near the home of wealthy businessman Moninder Singh Pandher. This led to an investigation that uncovered a horrifying pattern of abductions, sexual assault, murder, and even cannibalism.
The nation was stunned not just by the brutality but also by the police’s failure to investigate missing person reports for over a year. This negligence allowed the crimes to continue and led to widespread anger and criticism of the police.
The Real Discovery
In December 2006, residents found decomposed body parts in a drain near Pandher’s house. The police, alerted by the discovery, found numerous human remains. This led to a major investigation and the arrest of Surinder Koli, a domestic helper in Pandher's home, who later confessed to the murders. The case revealed a shocking and brutal reality, with the discovery of remains from at least 19 victims, including children and one adult named Payal.
The case led to intense legal battles. In 2009, Pandher and Koli were convicted for the murder of a 14-year-old girl, Rimpa Haldar, and sentenced to death. Koli received multiple death sentences for additional crimes. However, in 2015, the Allahabad High Court commuted Koli’s death sentence to life imprisonment due to delays in the legal process. In 2019, he was handed another death sentence, bringing his total convictions to 13.
A Stunning Reversal in 2023
In a surprising turn of events, the Allahabad High Court acquitted both Surinder Koli and Moninder Singh Pandher in 2023. The court cited insufficient evidence and overturned the previous convictions. The acquittal came after 17 years of legal battles, casting doubt on the original investigations and judgments.
Conclusion
The Nithari Killings remain one of India’s most notorious criminal cases. The recent acquittal of Surinder Koli and Moninder Singh Pandher has reopened old wounds and questions about the justice system. While the exact number of victims remains debated, the case continues to be a chilling reminder of the complexities of criminal justice and the ongoing quest for truth and justice.
